Correction added August 1, 2026: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that J.J. Spaun’s Valero Texas Open victory secured his 2026 Masters invitation. Spaun had already qualified for the Masters before the tournament. The headline, URL, and article have been corrected.
J.J. Spaun won the 2026 Valero Texas Open on Sunday, April 5, finishing one shot clear at TPC San Antonio. The victory was his second at the tournament and his third PGA TOUR title.
Spaun closed with a 5-under 67 and finished at 17-under 271. He made birdie at the par-3 16th, drove the green and made eagle at the par-4 17th, then parred the final hole. Robert MacIntyre, Matt Wallace, and Michael Kim tied for second, one shot behind.
Spaun Was Already Qualified for the Masters
The Valero victory did not earn Spaun’s place at Augusta National. The PGA TOUR’s tournament recap stated that Spaun already had his Masters spot as the reigning U.S. Open champion. The official Masters invitee list also recorded several qualifying categories for him.
The distinction matters because the Valero can award the final Masters place only when its winner is not already qualified. Spaun’s victory strengthened his form entering the year’s first major; it did not create his invitation.
What the Win Meant Before Augusta
Spaun entered the week without a top-20 finish in his first seven PGA TOUR starts of 2026. Winning in difficult, rain-affected conditions gave him his first title since the previous summer’s U.S. Open and a positive result four days before the Masters began.
After the round, Spaun acknowledged the uneven start to his season, saying, “This game is so crazy.” The result supplied a clear pre-Masters storyline: an already-qualified major champion had returned to the winner’s circle immediately before traveling to Augusta.
